| This is one of a set of eight plates which are identical to the series on display in the King’s Dining Room at the recently restored Kew Palace. Each plate has a unique design incorporating the name of a person who met or might have dined with George III at Kew Palace.
Johan Zoffany (1733 – 1810) came to England in 1758 and found favour with George III and Queen Charlotte whom on several occasions he painted at home with their young family. Part of a quotation from Hazlitt appears on the plate which relates to an amusing incident when George III misheard Zoffany: “It was done all but the goat - this is always the way. You said it was done all but the coat - the last time I was here.”
