| This is one of a set of eight plates which are identical to the series on display in the King’s Dining Room at the recently restored Kew Palace. Each plate has a unique design incorporating the name of a person who met or might have dined with George III at Kew Palace.
Samuel Johnson (1709 – 1784) was a well-known bibliophile and lexicographer, author of the famous dictionary. The quotation on the plate reads, “He is the fine gentleman I have ever seen”.
