Henry VIII toby jug (large)
There is something very British about Toby Jugs, they reflect ordinary Britain at a time when hearty drinking was part of everyday life. The idea derives from a song ‘The Brown Jug’ written in 1761 by the Reverend Francis Faulks. It told how a potter discovered the grave of a drinker called Toby Fillpot long after his body had decayed and turned to clay. With part of poor Toby the potter made a beer jug. The song proved very popular and it was only a matter of time before a real potter hit upon the idea of making a jug out of Toby, just like in the song Exquisitely crafted and painted by hand, this splendid china Toby Jug represents 'Bluff King Hal' himself in all his regal finery. Definitely a 'must' for collectors! Height: 18.5cm.
