*Kew Palace plate: Sir William Herschel


This is one of a set of eight plates which are identical to the series on display in the King’s Dining Room at Kew Palace. Each plate has a unique design incorporating the name of a person who met or might have dined with George III at Kew Palace. Sir William Herschel (1738 – 1822) was a musician and then an astronomer who discovered a star and named it “Georgium Sidus” after George III. The King became his patron, in 1782 offering him the position of court astronomer at Windsor He became president of the Royal Astronomical Society shortly after its foundation in 1821. The quotation on the plate reads, “The king has been this year very gracious to science – Herschel is taken up”. Limited edition of 120. Bone china, domestic dishwasher proof, 30.5 cm diameter.
