The halberd was a two-handed pole weapon that came to prominent use during the 14th and 15th centuries. Mounted on a long shaft with a chopping axe blade, topped with a spike for defence against cavalry and a hook or thorn on the back side of the axe blade to grapple mounted combatants, this versatile weapon gained a fearsome reputation on the battlefield. Happily, now only feared by envelopes!
