Hand crafted from polished steel, The King's Great Helm with crown features a decorated brass crown riveted to the top.
The Great Helm first appeared towards the end of the 12th century out of a need for greater protection for the head and neck. It proved popular and appeared in most European armies, worn by men-at-arms and by knights. Crusading knights such as the Knights Templar also wore the helm. The helm provided protection compared to earlier helm's but it did restrict vision and could become extremely hot and stuffy, particularly on Crusade.
In the 14th century it was common to see kings wear a crown on their great helms so they could be readily recognised by their own soldiers on the battlefield. Both Edward III of England and Robert the Bruce of Scotland seals feature them mounted with great helms with crowns.
