Pewter wine fountain drinking cup
This regal pewter wine cup quotes words found engraved on the sides of the wine fountain at Hampton Court Palace: "make-goode-cheere-who-wyshes". Crafted in the finest pewter, any King would be proud to drink from it.
The wine fountain at Hampton Court Palace is a replica of one of the two built by Henry VIII to display his wealth and generosity at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, an extravagant festival to celebrate his newfound friendship with Francis I, King of France. In Tudor times, wine was often run through public fountains at times of public celebration , such as Anne Boleyn's coronation, as a show of largesse to the population.
