"Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot."
Famously caught in the act of attempting to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605, Guy (or Guido) Fawkes was imprisoned and tortured at the Tower of London.
In 1606, James I passed a thanksgiving act celebrating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot and his deliverance from danger with bonfires and fireworks. Bonfire Night celebrations still take place today on 5 November, the anniversary of foiling the plot.
