Medieval shields were used both to protect the knight and act as a weapon to bash enemies. Shields were usually decorated with the knight’s coat of arms and heraldic symbols that identified him both on the battlefield and in tournaments.

This type of shield is called a kite shield and examples of it can be seen in the Bayeux Tapestry which illustrates the events of the Norman conquest of England around 1066. Our shield also features the coat of arms of Richard the Lionheart which is emblazoned across the Cross of St. George.
