Henry VIII, son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, was born at Greenwich Palace on 28th June 1491. King Henry VIII reduced the purity of England's silver and gold coins by adding cheap metal such as copper to them. This process, called debasement, helped fund his foreign wars and lifestyle. His actions caused high price rises and public unrest as people lost faith in England's coins. As the coins wore away, the copper shone through his image, earning him the nickname ?Old Coppernose'. This reproduction gold sovereign coin is cast from an original coin that was minted at the Tower of London.
