The design features an interpretation of the 'young head' portrait of Queen Victoria which was used on coins struck by the Royal Mint during her reign. The design also features several innovations from the Victorian era including a steam train, steam powered ships, a penny farthing and the telephone. All of these are set in mechanical cogs which represent the rapid industrialisation of the Victorian era.

Furthermore, the coin features the words 'Workshop of the World' inscribed on the edge of the coin to describe the British position as the industrial powerhouse of the 19th century.
