Unicorn Tapestries - captive unicorn cushion
This beautiful tapestry cushion has been inspired by the The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries that were woven at the end of the 15th century in the Netherlands. The tapestries were probably made for Anne of Brittany to celebrate her marriage to Louis XII, King of France. This cushion illustrates the final tapestry in the series, The Captive Unicorn. In this design, the unicorn is tethered to a tree and constrained by a fence. It is important to note that the chain is not securedand the fence is low. The unicorn could escape should it wish, but is happy in its confinement. The thistle and wild orchid represent themes of love, marriage and procreation, and the scene is believed to represent the beloved tamed.
The original tapestries are considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages and would make a wonderful addition to your home. The charming theme of this cushion would also make a unique and thoughtful wedding present.
These traditional tapestries are woven in cotton on mechanical jacquard looms in Flanders, the home of tapestry since medieval times. The manufacturing process used to produce these tapestries has remained largely unchanged for the last 200 years, ensuring a consistently high quality product.
